GETTING THE RIGHT SIZE BREAST IMPLANTS
Are you ideal breasts big, small, or somewhere in between? Although your anatomy will impact the size of implant best suited for your body, patients do have a lot of flexibility in choosing their breast size. Before your consultation, think about your ideal breasts. Do you want big and perky or something a little more subtle?
SALINE OR SILICONE?
Both saline and silicone implants feature a silicone outer shell. The biggest difference is in the filling. Saline implants are filled with a medical grade saline solution while silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel.
- Silicone– These implants have a more natural feel. They are less prone to rippling than saline implants. Silicone implants are pre-filled so they may require a larger incision. They also tend to be more expensive than saline. Silicone implants are FDA approved for cosmetic breast augmentation in patients aged 22+. Silicone implants are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and projections, making them the most popular choice for breast augmentation.
- Gummy Bear Implants– Gummy bear implants are a unique type of silicone implant. They feature a silicone shell with a thick, cohesive silicone gel filling. They have a similar feel to a gummy bear. These implants are believed to hold their shape better than other types of implants. They can feel very natural when properly placed.
- Saline– These implants have a firmer feel. They are filled once inside of the breast, allowing for a smaller incision. Shape options are more limited with saline implants. If a saline implant ruptures, the breast will quickly deflate. This makes it easier to spot a potential leak, a fact that is comforting to some patients. Saline implants are available to women ages 18+.
SMOOTH OR TEXTURED?
Implants can have a smooth outer shell or a textured one. Textured implants are a must with a shaped implant, as they hold the implant in position. Texture may also reduce the risk of capsular contracture for patients at an increased risk. These implants may have a firmer feel. Most women opt for smooth, round implants but, if textured are recommended in your situation, we’ll let you know.
ROUND OR SHAPED?
We offer round and shaped breast implants. Shaped implants typically feature a teardrop, or anatomical shape. This means they have more projection at the bottom and less at the top of the implant. A teardrop implant can create a more natural look for some patients, but it really depends on the amount of breast tissue you already have and where the implant will be placed.
PROJECTION?
Projection is an important factor in choosing the right breast implants. It refers to the height of the implant off the chest. This is a valuable tool for creating breasts that look natural with your body type, but are also your desired size. We’ll explain your options and make some recommendations.
There are a lot of decisions to make as you prepare for breast augmentation, but we’ll be with you throughout the process to provide advice and recommendations. Discover your ideal breasts with the right implants.
